The Scaling Up Nutrition Business Network (SBN) Pitch Competition – Zambia is a programme developed in partnership with Scaling Up Nutrition Business Network, World Food Programme (WFP), The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, DSM Nutritional Products and Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) dedicated to posturing Nutrition-focused businesses that are innovatively improving diet and tackling malnutrition in Zambia.

The SBN Pitch Competition – Zambia will be held on 21 September, 2018 for ten (10) shortlisted businesses to showcase and pitch to stakeholders. The top two (2) entrepreneurs from the SBN Pitch Competition – Zambia shall be mentored and trained to be investor ready – and attend an all expenses paid trip to The Nutrition Africa Investor Forum (NAIF) in Nairobi, Kenya this October, 2018, where they will compete with startups from other African countries.

The objectives of the SBN Pitch Competition – Zambia are to:

  • Build a pipeline of quality ‘nutrition investments’ with a focus on SMEs that can respond to pressing local nutrition priorities.
  • Leverage partnerships to provide technical assistance to promising local nutrition sensitive SMEs.
  • To prepare for scale innovative nutrition investments, and showcase sustainable market-based solutions that address nutrition issues which can be adopted and scaled up regionally.

Applicant must:

  • Be a Zambian citizen (male or female).
  • Have a business whose products and/or services promote nutrition and food safety in Zambia. Note that the SBN Pitch Competition – Zambia will abide by the UN Business Sector Guidelines and priority will only be given to businesses whose operations abide by the guidelines.
  • Be a start-up or growth stage SME fully registered with the Patents and Companies Registration Agency (PACRA).
  • Be available to participate FULL-TIME in the pre-coaching session, the pitch-event and ALL other required sessions between Thursday 13th September, 2018 and Wednesday 17th October, 2018.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for businesses that keep a focus on:

  • Nutrition – Address local diet quality gaps and increases the consumption of safe and nutritious foods.
  • Innovation – Accessible and disruptive market-based innovations in local food systems that can add value.
  • Scale – Commercially viable investment opportunities along the local food value chain that have the potential for larger food systems change.
  • Impact – Food system investments that provide meaningful benefits for the most vulnerable populations and hyperlocal communities.

What do I need for my application?

Calls for application for the SBN Pitch Competition – Zambia will commence in August 2018 in Lusaka. There will be a one-day pre-coaching session for the 10 shortlisted companies to help entrepreneurs develop their pitch with focus on an individual growth plan and roadmap to scale. The SBN Pitch Competition – Zambia will then be held and two (2) winners will be selected by a panel of three (3) judges.  This will be followed by post pitch-event sessions (3 hours of sessions each week for 3 weeks) aimed at helping the entrepreneurs address gaps that they have identified in their businesses.

When can I apply?

  • Application opens on Wednesday 22nd August, 2018 and closes at 17:00hrs CAT on Wednesday 12th September, 2018. Applications submitted after the deadline will not be accepted.

Who is eligible to apply?

Applicant must

  • Be a Zambian citizen (male or female)
  • Have a business whose products and/or services promote nutrition and food safety in Zambia. Note that the SBN Pitch Competition – Zambia will abide by the UN Business Sector Guidelines and priority will only be given to businesses whose operations abide by the guidelines.

Can I apply even if my business is not based in Lusaka?

  • Yes. 10 entrepreneurs will be shortlisted based on merit.

Are foundation, non-profits or NGOs eligible?

  • The programme supports only for-profit businesses and social-enterprises whose products or services promote nutrition and food safety in Zambia.

Is there a fee to participate?

  • There is no fee to apply or participate in the SBN Pitch Competition – Zambia

If I have two businesses, can I apply with both?

  • Only one application per person will be accepted, so you are advised to present your stronger business.

Can I apply if my business is not within the agribusiness/food sector?

  • Only businesses whose products or services promote nutrition and food safety in Zambia are eligible to apply.

Can I apply even if my business is not registered?

  • Unfortunately, we will only consider registered businesses with evidence of the Patents and Companies Registration Agency (PACRA) Certificate of Incorporation.

Is my company eligible even if I founded it with someone else?

  • Yes, your company is eligible but only one (1) participant per business will be accepted into the programme.

Can we apply as a team?

  • No. Only one (1) participant per business will be accepted into the programme.

How will I know that my application has been successful?

  • Candidates who are shortlisted for the next stage will be contacted via email.

Can I make changes in my application once I have submitted it or can I do a fresh application instead?

  • No, once you have submitted it is final and you will not be able edit the application. Also, multiple entries will be disqualified. We encourage you to verify your application carefully before submitting.

How will I know if my application is accepted for participation in the programme?

  • Shortlisted candidates will be contacted via email.

Will applicants receive personal feedback about their application?
