BongoHive Launches AI Lab to Drive Innovation and Economic Growth in Zambia

BongoHive, a leading technology and innovation hub in Zambia, today announced the launch of its AI Lab, a dedicated research and development centre focused on advancing artificial intelligence (AI) solutions in the country. The lab will serve as a hub for AI research, development, and industry collaboration, enabling businesses, policymakers, and communities to harness the potential of AI for economic growth and social impact.

The BongoHive AI Lab is being launched in response to the growing need for AI expertise and solutions in Zambia. According to a recent survey by BongoHive, in collaboration with the Zambia ICT Authority and the Ubuntu AI Community, there is a significant gap between the potential of AI and its current adoption in Zambia. The survey found that while many organisations recognise the potential of AI, they lack the expertise and resources to implement AI solutions. This gap presents a significant opportunity for Zambia to leverage AI for economic growth and social development.

The lab will focus on developing AI applications in key sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, finance, and education, with the goal of driving innovation and creating economic opportunities. The global AI market is expected to reach $1.5 trillion by 2025, and Africa is expected to account for a significant share of this growth. By investing in AI research and development, Zambia can position itself to capitalise on this growing market and create high-skilled jobs for its citizens.

“We believe that AI has the potential to transform Zambia’s economy and society,” said Lukonga Lindunda, Executive Director of BongoHive.

“The launch of our AI Lab is a significant step towards building a vibrant AI ecosystem in the country and positioning Zambia as a leader in AI innovation in Africa.”

Mapalo Lukashi, Data and AI Lead at BongoHive, will be leading the AI Lab. “I am excited to be leading this initiative and work with our partners to develop AI solutions that address local challenges and create opportunities for Zambians,” said Lukashi. “We will be collaborating with industry partners, research institutions, and policymakers to ensure that our work is relevant, impactful, and aligned with national development goals.”

The BongoHive AI Lab will conduct research, develop AI-powered solutions, and provide training and capacity-building programs to bridge the AI skills gap in Zambia. The lab will also advocate for ethical AI practices and policy development to ensure that AI is used responsibly and for the benefit of all Zambians.

In addition to the above, the AI Lab will actively support startups building AI solutions and run AI accelerators and incubators for entrepreneurs. This will help to foster a vibrant AI startup ecosystem in Zambia and create opportunities for young people to innovate and build businesses using AI.

The launch of the BongoHive AI Lab is a significant milestone in Zambia’s journey towards becoming a knowledge-based economy. The lab is expected to play a key role in driving innovation, creating jobs, and improving the lives of Zambians.
