MentorPitch Cohort 2: Empowering African Startups through Angel Investment

As we approach the end of the year, our MentorPitch Programme is reaching its final stages with some invaluable lessons on Telling Your Story, Building a Great Team, Deploying the Right Technology, and Understanding Your Customer. These elements are essential for any startup aiming to make a lasting impact and achieve sustainable growth.

Zambia’s entrepreneurial landscape is flourishing, with new startups emerging each year. However, many early-stage startups face the significant challenge of securing the funding and resources needed to reach product-market fit. To address this, BongoHive, in partnership with TVC Labs and the Zambia Business Angels Network (ZBAN), launched the MentorPitch Programme, designed to bridge this gap for Zambia’s most promising tech-enabled startups.

The 11-week MentorPitch Programme is exclusively guiding startups founded within the last three years, helping them develop and refine their business strategies, operations, and growth plans. This year’s cohort includes promising ventures such as Astanah, Bwangu Delivery, Eride-Zambia, Fanaka Technologies, and Tash Classy Hair. Under the mentorship of seasoned angel investors, these startups are learning to build strong foundations that will set them on the path to scalable growth and market success.

Through the programme, participants gain critical skills that enhance their competitive advantage, including how to craft a compelling brand narrative, conduct market analysis, and deeply understand their customer’s needs and pain points. One of the most valuable aspects of MentorPitch is its interactive mentoring process, where startups benefit from one-on-one sessions with experienced investors. These sessions allow them to receive tailored feedback, sharpen their pitches, and gain a deeper understanding of what investors look for when evaluating opportunities. This practical experience is invaluable in preparing these startups for future funding rounds and positioning them for long-term success.

Anchored in the POEM (Product, Operations, Economics, and Market) Framework, this year’s MentorPitch cohort is equipped with essential insights into business strategy, operational efficiency, and financial management. The POEM Framework is a comprehensive approach that helps founders see their businesses holistically, guiding how to balance their growth ambitions with the realities of operational and financial demands. With this framework in mind, each startup is empowered to build a business that is not only innovative but also resilient and scalable.
