Driving Innovation in Zambia: Highlights from the USAID BEP Session

The USAID Business Enabling Project (BEP) in Zambia recently held a Pause and Reflect session, facilitated by the BongoHive Consult innovation unit, which showcased the innovation unit’s commitment to leveraging entrepreneurship and technology for economic development. This initiative aimed to evaluate the project’s progress, identify key challenges, and develop actionable strategies for future improvements.

During the session, innovative methods such as divergent and convergent thinking were employed to engage participants. Divergent techniques like brainstorming and mind mapping allowed for the generation of a wide range of creative ideas, while convergent techniques, including SWOT analysis and critical thinking exercises, helped narrow these ideas down into practical solutions. This structured approach ensured a comprehensive evaluation of BEP’s achievements and challenges.

One of the significant outcomes of the session was the identification of five core challenge themes: bureaucracy, policy reforms, an unfavourable business environment, private-public mistrust, and access to finance. Participants conducted an in-depth analysis of these issues, leveraging their diverse experiences and insights. This collaborative effort resulted in clear recommendations for streamlining administrative processes, updating policies, and enhancing the business environment.

The session also emphasised building trust between the private and public sectors and increasing access to finance for businesses. By fostering an inclusive and collaborative environment, the innovation unit facilitated meaningful dialogue among stakeholders, which is crucial for the project’s success and alignment with Zambia’s broader economic growth objectives.

Overall, the Pause and Reflect session highlighted the innovation unit’s pivotal role in driving the BEP’s strategic direction. The insights and recommendations from this session will guide the project’s next phase, ensuring continued support for inclusive private-sector investment and sustainable economic development in Zambia.
